1956 – 70 Years Through Film
From October 16–18, 56Films will present a three-day film festival at Budapest’s historic Corvin Cinema, marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
The choice of venue is deeply symbolic. In 1956, the area around Corvin Cinema was the site of some of the fiercest fighting of the Revolution, and the cinema itself served as a base and gathering place for hundreds of freedom fighters. Seventy years later, it will once again become a place for audiences to come together to remember, reflect, and discuss the legacy of 1956.
The festival seeks to keep the memory of 1956 alive through an accessible cultural event that invites audiences to engage in dialogue and reflection. The programme will bring together documentaries and a selection of feature films that revisit the events of 1956 while exploring their significance and enduring legacy today.
Screenings will be followed by Q&As with directors, producers and historians.
The festival is supported by the City of Budapest, Budapest Film, the Embassy of the United States of America in Budapest, the National Film Institute, the National Film Institute – Film Archive, and Origo Digital Film.
The festival is directed by Réka Pigniczky, co-founder of 56Films and an award-winning Hungarian-American documentary filmmaker. Her parents fled Hungary for the United States in the aftermath of the 1956 Revolution, and she has explored the history and enduring legacy of 1956 in several of her films.
